Reaching Out
Supporting a loved one through their recovery from addiction and mental health disorders can feel like a daunting task. As a member of their support network, you will play a crucial role in guiding them through decisions about treatment, such as the timing, location, cost, scope, and goals of their recovery. While the responsibility can be overwhelming, approaching it with an open heart and mindful attention to available options can help you both find the best path forward.
This page is designed to give you an understanding of what you and your loved one can expect from The Beekeeper Sri Lanka. By offering insight into our treatment approach, we hope to help you assess how our program aligns with your loved one’s needs and recovery journey.
At The Beekeeper, we specialise in treating co-occurring disorders—when addiction and mental health issues exist together. This dual challenge requires a more comprehensive and holistic approach than traditional recovery programs. We provide integrative treatments that combine Eastern philosophy with Western therapeutic practices. Rooted in Buddhist teachings, The Beekeeper offers a treatment environment where the body, mind, and spirit can heal in harmony, empowering your loved one to make lasting changes and build a foundation for long-term recovery.
Supportive communication
Addiction can deeply impact relationships, creating distance and even fracturing bonds with friends, family, and intimate partners. However, the decision to seek recovery offers a powerful opportunity to begin healing these relationships. Treatment seekers benefit immensely from the support of informed, compassionate individuals who are willing to guide them as they navigate their recovery journey. As a support person, your input will be invaluable as your loved one charts their treatment course, assesses their resources, and sets their goals.
For both those struggling with co-occurring disorders and their support networks, it is essential to establish open and effective communication about the treatment process. Addiction and untreated mental health conditions can often disrupt relationships, making it harder for someone to seek recovery or for others to offer support. This is why it is so important to approach the recovery process with empathy, patience, and a commitment to understanding.
The pursuit of recovery can bring tremendous relief, comfort, and hope to those affected by addiction or mental health struggles. However, it can also stir up feelings of anxiety, sadness, or even anger. It’s crucial to create space for these emotions to exist, acknowledging and validating them as part of the healing process. This ensures that conversations about treatment remain honest, constructive, and productive.
At The Beekeeper, we value the input of our clients’ support networks. The preliminary assessment, conducted before arrival at our Sri Lanka centre, allows support individuals to share their perspectives on how issues manifest in their loved one’s life. This information helps our treatment team better understand the challenges and opportunities that will be addressed in the recovery journey, enabling us to tailor the program to fit the specific needs of the client. When done with love and care, this collaborative effort can be a powerful step in supporting a successful recovery process.
The process
The Beekeeper Sri Lanka is nestled in the serene province of Pasyala, offering an eight-acre hilltop sanctuary surrounded by hundreds of acres of wild jungle and lush plantations. This tranquil setting provides the perfect backdrop for profound physiological, emotional, and spiritual recovery. The main house, a stunning example of 1930s Sri Lankan aristocratic architecture, is designed around an open courtyard, featuring sun-drenched terraces, expansive high-ceilinged rooms, and intimate private spaces. The ground floor includes two spacious bedrooms, while three large suites occupy the upper level, ensuring a peaceful and restorative retreat for every guest.
The initial assessment at The Beekeeper Sri Lanka builds upon the preliminary evaluation and involves a comprehensive, holistic review conducted by a dedicated team, including both a physician and a therapist. This thorough assessment ensures that all aspects of the client's medical and therapeutic needs are addressed.
The medical team collaborates to determine the necessary detoxification approach. Most detox needs can be managed in-house at The Beekeeper, but if more intensive care is required, detoxification can be handled at our partner hospital in Sri Lanka. Once detoxification is complete and the client is medically stable, they can return to The Beekeeper to engage in our specialised recovery programmes.
In addition to physical detoxification, many individuals benefit from a "social detox" during their recovery journey. This phase allows clients to focus more fully on their treatment and healing, while also establishing clearer boundaries and healthier routines. To support this, phone and social media communication are typically limited in the early stages of treatment.
These boundaries help ensure that communication remains intentional and focused, reducing the risk of emotional overwhelm or reactivity. By limiting external distractions, clients can dedicate themselves fully to their recovery process and build a solid foundation for lasting change.
How we work
As a support person, understanding the treatment model at The Beekeeper will better equip you to assist your loved one in making the best decisions for their recovery. The Beekeeper’s approach is comprehensive, inclusive, affirming, and compassionate, blending modern medical and psychological techniques with the wisdom of ancient Eastern philosophies. Rooted in Buddhist principles and a deeply spiritual ethos, the centre offers a balanced treatment experience that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit.
At The Beekeeper, the focus is on holistic healing through both residential treatment and aftercare planning. These programmes are tailored to meet each client’s individual needs, addressing both their immediate challenges and the long-term recovery goals. By providing a well-rounded approach to treatment, The Beekeeper ensures that clients are supported throughout their recovery journey and beyond.
Residential treatment at The Beekeeper provides a supportive and structured environment where clients can fully focus on their recovery from substance use disorders and mental health issues. By living at the centre for an extended period, clients can immerse themselves in the healing process and experience a wide range of recovery activities that foster long-term well-being.
During their stay, clients are guided in learning how to live without the use of addictive substances or processes, and are equipped with tools to manage chronic mental health conditions. The Beekeeper offers a high level of medical care, mental health therapy, and spiritual guidance, ensuring that all aspects of a client’s well-being are addressed.
Residential treatment at The Beekeeper is an active process, with clients expected to participate in individual therapy, group therapy, and other therapeutic activities on a daily basis. This involvement is essential to help clients develop the skills, routines, and resilience needed for sustained recovery.
At The Beekeeper Sri Lanka, medical care is a core component of the residential treatment programme, offered both daily and on an as-needed basis. Upon arrival, each client has a one-on-one meeting with a medical provider and a qualified therapist to assess their specific needs. This initial consultation ensures that clients receive the appropriate medical treatment and care throughout their stay.
This process is designed to help clients gain a deeper understanding of the physical, emotional, and spiritual impacts of addiction. It also provides the opportunity to implement personalised healing strategies, promoting a stronger connection between the body and mind. By addressing both the physiological and psychological aspects of addiction, clients are supported in building a foundation for long-term recovery.
Therapy is the cornerstone of a client’s recovery journey at The Beekeeper Sri Lanka. It is within the therapeutic relationship that individuals with addiction or untreated mental health conditions often learn to cultivate trust and healthy cooperation. These relationships provide a safe space for clients to explore and gain insights into the thought and behaviour patterns that have contributed to problematic behaviours and their negative consequences.
Through therapy, clients develop a deeper sense of self-awareness, which is essential for understanding their inner lives and recognizing the root causes of their struggles. Therapy also helps clients establish the accountability necessary to make lasting, positive changes in their behaviour. This process empowers them to adopt healthier patterns, set meaningful goals, and move toward sustainable recovery.
While many recovery centres offer 28-day treatment programs, The Beekeeper Sri Lanka recommends a 90-day treatment regimen, with a minimum stay of 35 days for those who are unable to commit to the full duration. This extended approach is backed by evidence in Western medicine, which shows that longer treatment periods are more effective in achieving lasting recovery, especially for individuals with complex co-occurring disorders.
A longer treatment duration allows for a more thorough and comprehensive approach, addressing not only the immediate symptoms of addiction and mental health conditions but also the underlying causes. It gives clients the time and space to stabilise physically, emotionally, and mentally, fostering the development of healthier coping strategies and more sustainable recovery practices. This holistic and extended treatment period significantly improves outcomes and supports long-term success in managing co-occurring disorders.

The next steps
The journey of addiction treatment at The Beekeeper Sri Lanka is designed to help individuals with co-occurring disorders rediscover their sense of self-worth, value, and hope. However, as individuals transition out of the supportive, structured environment of residential treatment, they must be equipped with the skills and strategies to manage the challenges of the real world. This is where aftercare becomes a pivotal part of the recovery process.
At The Beekeeper, aftercare serves as a crucial bridge to sustained recovery, helping individuals establish the routines and habits necessary for long-term sobriety. As a supporter, your role is instrumental in offering stability, encouragement, and reinforcement of recovery strategies. From the outset of treatment, our team works closely with both clients and their families to develop a personalised aftercare plan that takes into account medical, psychological, and spiritual needs. This plan is crafted with the aim of ensuring a seamless transition from the residential programme to independent living, ensuring clients have continued access to care, resources, and support.
A well-organised aftercare plan significantly improves the likelihood of lasting recovery. These plans typically include connections to local resources, referrals for ongoing therapy, regular mental health check-ins, 12-step recovery meetings, group therapy sessions, and other forms of ongoing support. The aftercare process emphasises the importance of establishing a strong, supportive network to help individuals maintain the progress made during their stay at The Beekeeper.
As a member of your loved one’s support system, your involvement is key to their continued success in recovery. The more you understand the aftercare plan and your role in it, the more you can offer the stability and guidance needed for your loved one to navigate life post-treatment. Our team at The Beekeeper is here to help you as well, providing resources and tools designed to assist families and loved ones in supporting their treatment-seeking individuals through the aftercare phase.
We encourage you to actively engage with our team, share your experiences, and take advantage of the available resources to ensure that your loved one receives the continued care and attention they need on their journey to meaningful and lasting recovery.
