Referring to The Beekeeper Sri Lanka
Addiction and mental health disorders have traditionally been treated separately from mainstream medical care, but this paradigm is rapidly shifting. Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in collaboration among psychiatrists, primary care physicians, psychotherapists, and other healthcare professionals to help individuals find the most effective treatment options for their mental health and addiction struggles.
Navigators and peer recovery specialists have also played an essential role in connecting those affected by these conditions with timely and effective care. As awareness of the widespread impact of addiction and mental health issues grows, more professionals are stepping forward to guide their clients and patients toward the best possible treatment.
This page is designed to assist professionals in making informed referrals for clients seeking treatment for co-occurring disorders, where addiction and mental health conditions exist simultaneously. Recognizing and addressing these co-occurring disorders is crucial, as the presence of both greatly influences a client’s overall prognosis and the treatment outcomes for each condition. The coexistence of addiction and mental health disorders complicates treatment, making an integrated approach essential.
The Beekeeper Sri Lanka is an integrative, health-focused recovery centre specialising in the concurrent treatment of addiction and mental health disorders. Our treatment philosophy combines ancient Eastern practices with evidence-based mental health and addiction recovery techniques, creating a holistic, connected framework for healing and growth.
What to expect
Substance use disorders of mild to moderate severity are often managed effectively through regular visits to primary care providers, psychiatrists, or therapists. The same can be said for mild mental health conditions. However, when a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder exist simultaneously, specialised, targeted care is typically recommended by leading authorities in the field.
If you and your client determine that treatment for both conditions is needed, initiating a referral to The Beekeeper is simple. You can reach us by phone, email, or by completing our contact form. A member of our team will promptly follow up to discuss your client’s needs.
At The Beekeeper, we provide sensitive, culturally competent, and individualised assessments for clients with co-occurring disorders. Our flexible, evidence-based treatment approach focuses on integrative care, promoting both healing and self-efficacy.
Our staff adheres to rigorous practice standards to ensure high-quality care for your patients and clients. Our multidisciplinary team includes internationally accredited psychiatrists, therapists, and medical professionals, ensuring comprehensive and top-tier treatment. Meals are prepared by a renowned chef trained in nutrition, and our medical director is licensed by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health.
Our team takes pride in effective communication with both clients and their support networks when appropriate, ensuring a seamless, collaborative treatment experience.
The process
The Beekeeper is nestled in the tranquil province of Pasyala, Sri Lanka, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of hilltops and lush jungle. The main house is a remarkable showcase of 1930s Sri Lankan aristocratic architecture, originally designed and built by a returning High Commissioner from London. The house is centred around an open courtyard and features expansive sunlit terraces, sweeping verandahs, high-ceilinged drawing rooms, and cosy private spaces. The ground floor offers two spacious bedrooms, while three grand suites on the first floor provide a serene and luxurious retreat, perfect for relaxation and reflection.
Assessment
Upon arrival, clients undergo a thorough assessment by our treatment team, alongside medical professionals from our partner hospital, to determine their need for medical detoxification. For uncomplicated detox, the process is managed directly at The Beekeeper. However, if a client's detox requirements are more intensive, they will receive care at the partner hospital until they are medically stable, after which they will return to The Beekeeper for continued treatment.
Group Therapy & Recovery Activities
The Beekeeper provides comprehensive staffing and 24/7 care to ensure the well-being of our clients. Nursing support is available around the clock, and physicians conduct initial evaluations and regular follow-ups throughout treatment. A medical professional is always on call for any urgent needs. Each client is paired with a dedicated therapist and participates in group therapy sessions, alongside a variety of other recovery-focused activities designed to support their healing process.
Treatment Length
At The Beekeeper Sri Lanka, we highly recommend a minimum stay of 35 days for treatment, as research shows that longer stays are associated with higher rates of abstinence and an improved quality of life. A 35-day stay provides clients with sufficient time to achieve physiological stability, integrate therapeutic tools, and establish healthy routines. This duration also allows clients to build trusting relationships with their treatment team and create sustainable spiritual practices. However, we understand that each individual's needs are unique, and longer stays may be necessary. Our programme is designed with flexibility in mind, and we find that 90 days often provides the optimal amount of time for a comprehensive and successful recovery experience.
How We Work
At The Beekeeper, inclusive and affirming therapy is central to a client’s recovery journey. By fostering trust and mutual cooperation with our clients, we guide them in gaining deep insights into the thought and behavioural patterns that contribute to challenges in their lives. This process helps clients build a stronger connection with their inner selves, enhance self-awareness, and establish the accountability necessary to cultivate healthier behavioural patterns and sustainable recovery.
The Beekeeper adopts a comprehensive and integrative approach to therapy, incorporating a range of therapeutic models to meet the unique needs of each client. These include psychodynamic psychotherapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, somatic therapies, and other evidence-based approaches. What unites these diverse modalities is our unwavering commitment to empathy and a focus on compassionate care, ensuring that all of our clients feel supported throughout their recovery journey.
Empathy and compassion are foundational to the therapeutic approach at The Beekeeper Sri Lanka. Our skilled therapists utilise a thematic approach to group therapy, where each series of sessions is centred around a specific topic. For instance, one week may focus on relapse prevention, followed by another week dedicated to teaching self-compassion, diversity, and inclusion. This structured approach enables therapists to offer practical, personalised feedback that resonates with clients' real-life experiences, supporting their journey toward lasting recovery.
These therapeutic approaches were developed by highly qualified and accredited mental health professionals from across the globe, incorporating time-honoured Eastern traditions of mindfulness, self-awareness, and cognitive insight. These modalities are supported by robust evidence, demonstrating their effectiveness in fostering long-term recovery from co-occurring disorders and enhancing overall functioning. Clients who actively integrate these approaches into their lives experience significant improvements in mental health and well-being.
The Work Begins
The Beekeeper provides customised detox programs as a fully licensed detox and accredited rehabilitation centre in Sri Lanka. Before starting their residential treatment, all clients undergo a thorough medical evaluation to ensure they are medically stable. Our Medical Director assesses each client’s detoxification needs individually, determining the appropriate detox protocol based on their unique requirements. The duration of detox varies depending on the specific needs of each client.
The Beekeeper Sri Lanka is the centre where our residential programme is provided. Set in stunning gardens, our bespoke Sri Lanka rehab centre has been designed with recovery and restoration in mind. Each part of the centre caters to our client's needs to create a safe and conducive environment to ensure they can enjoy the serenity of the hilltops and jungle and access the city's amenities. This includes award-winning medical care provided in partnership with Durdans Hospital in Colombo, as well as a wide array of activities to enjoy during downtime.
The Beekeeper Sri Lanka is where the transformative journey begins, but the work doesn’t stop when clients leave our care. Ensuring that clients can safely transition back into their lives and continue to thrive is key. While much of the preparatory work is done during the residential programme, aftercare and ongoing support are crucial for long-term success. We provide continued support both locally in Sri Lanka for clients who wish to stay after treatment and through our global network of resources and connections to help guide clients on their ongoing recovery journey.
