Our mission is to provide safe, ethical, and evidence-based psychological care, grounded in trauma-informed principles such as safety, trust, empowerment, choice, and collaboration. These principles are woven into every aspect of our Centre, from personalised client care to our group therapy programs.
By combining therapy with integrative health approaches, we aim to equip you with the tools and coping strategies necessary to address trauma and regain your sense of strength. While PTSD and trauma can feel overwhelming, we are here to offer support on your journey back to mental wellness.
If you or someone you know requires treatment for PTSD or complex trauma, we are ready to assist you. Reach out to us today to learn more about our approach and whether it’s the right fit for your needs.
At The Beekeeper, we recognize that trauma is a multifaceted condition that requires a comprehensive treatment approach. This includes addressing the root causes of trauma, the responses it triggers, and the accompanying thoughts and emotions. To treat both the mind and body, we use an interdisciplinary approach, acknowledging the psychological and physical aspects of trauma. Our team of highly trained psychologists employs evidence-based therapeutic practices to guide you through trauma stabilisation, resolution, and the development of your self-efficacy.
We also emphasise mindfulness-based techniques that help you identify triggers and cultivate internal peace, promoting greater self-regulation. Together, we will equip you with practical skills to integrate into daily life, building a strong foundation for coping and thriving as you move forward.
When outpatient services are no longer sufficient, it may be time to explore a more immersive approach. Residential treatment offers a secure environment for healing from traumatic experiences, providing a calm and peaceful setting free from triggers that could cause re-traumatization. This type of treatment allows you to fully focus on your recovery, facilitating meaningful change in your life.
Through our residential program, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with others, build a supportive community, process your experiences, and distance yourself from triggering situations, all of which are essential for successful trauma recovery.
We also provide a range of integrative wellness activities, such as yoga, meditation, breathwork, and sound baths. These practices are essential in helping you reconnect your mind and body, playing a crucial role in trauma recovery. By fostering mindful awareness of the connection between your body, mind, and breath, these activities activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps regulate the stress response triggered by trauma. Learning these techniques in a supportive residential setting, under the guidance of expert instructors, gives you the tools to continue using them for sustained well-being as you progress through life.
In recent years, significant progress has been made in understanding the most effective ways to treat trauma. At The Beekeeper, our team of psychologists and clinical staff are highly trained in trauma theory and care. Through both individual and group therapy, you’ll have the opportunity to process your trauma, develop new coping strategies, and begin to thrive again.
Our psychologists use a flexible, eclectic approach to therapy, integrating various therapeutic techniques to address your unique needs. Given the complexity of trauma and PTSD, we tailor our treatment to ensure it aligns with your specific circumstances, providing you with the best chance for healing and recovery.
Our approach is pluralistic, often referred to as eclectic, which means we incorporate a variety of evidence-based psychological interventions tailored to your individual needs and stage of readiness. We don’t limit ourselves to one methodology. By adopting this flexible approach, we empower you to rediscover your ability to choose, make informed decisions, and reconnect with a renewed sense of self-efficacy and hope.
At The Beekeeper, we prioritise your individual needs, recognizing that each person is unique. Our approach is rooted in humanism, which emphasises the importance of treating each client with dignity and respect. The therapeutic relationship between you and your psychologist fosters a sense of safety and containment, allowing for a collaborative and open environment. These foundational elements help establish a strong base for trauma stabilisation, which is the critical stage before moving on to trauma processing.
At The Beekeeper, our clinical psychology team adheres to the best practice guidelines set by the British Psychological Society and the Healthcare Professionals Council, which represent the global standard of excellence. These guidelines form the foundation of our approach, ensuring that every aspect of your care—from assessment to treatment formulation, planning, and implementation—is carried out to the highest standards. We also ensure that your treatment is adapted as needed throughout the process of trauma healing, with careful consideration for end-of-treatment planning.
At The Beekeeper, we integrate mindfulness practices into our treatment approach, which includes activities like yoga and meditation. Mindfulness, defined as the awareness that arises from paying focused, nonjudgmental attention to the present moment, helps to reconnect your mind and body. Research has shown that these practices are effective in addressing the physical manifestations of trauma. We combine these integrative wellness techniques with psychological interventions to create a holistic treatment plan that supports your recovery. Rather than treating them as separate methods, we believe in their synergistic power to promote healing.
In some cases, medication may be a necessary component of trauma treatment. Our psychiatrists and psychologists will work together to assess if medication is appropriate for you. For those dealing with underlying issues such as depression or anxiety linked to trauma, medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may be prescribed. However, at The Beekeeper, any decision regarding medication is made collaboratively, with your preferences and recovery goals at the forefront of the decision-making process.
While PTSD and trauma are often discussed together, they are distinct concepts. Trauma refers to the emotional and psychological response to a significant or life-altering event. It can occur multiple times and take various forms, such as assault, car accidents, military experiences, traumatic grief, medical procedures, emotional neglect, violence, and bullying.
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), on the other hand, is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing trauma. It’s crucial to understand that not everyone who experiences a traumatic event will develop PTSD. For some, the aftermath may include only a few symptoms, while others may experience more severe and persistent signs that meet the criteria for PTSD or complex trauma. In some cases, people may experience what is known as post-traumatic optimism or growth, where they find meaning or personal growth through the challenges posed by trauma.
Life-threatening and other serious events can trigger a trauma response, and the initial symptoms you might experience following such an event can include:
Shock
Confusion
Numbness
Dissociation
Sadness
Anxiety or agitation
Feeling on Edge
PTSD arises as a response to traumatic experiences, with symptoms typically emerging within three months of the event. To be diagnosed with PTSD, symptoms must persist for a minimum of one month and be intense enough to disrupt daily life, including work, personal responsibilities, and relationships.
Symptoms of PTSD include:
Acute stress disorder (ASD) is diagnosed when symptoms persist for less than four weeks. If symptoms, including arousal, avoidance, and dissociation, last longer than four weeks, PTSD may be diagnosed. Additionally, individuals with PTSD may also experience other mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse disorders.
The good news is that trauma-informed care, along with holistic approaches, has proven effective in helping individuals with PTSD process and heal from their trauma.
